Summer Wash Days

If there are two things I’ve learned throughout my curly hair journey it’s that 1) it’s okay to switch it up and use different products & brands, and 2) you don’t have to spend all of your money on products. I’ve been using brands like Shea Moisture & Miss Jessie’s for years now (even when I rocked my super short curls) and nothing has changed.

I’ve tried the $50+ products and can I tell you a secret? I noticed NO difference. I’ve always been a fan of the $20 and under club when it comes to beauty – and I think my curls are, too. The best part? Some of my favorite brands are black owned or black founded and available at Target.

With summer heat rolling in, I’ve been keeping my wash day routine simple, with a focus on adding moisture back to my curl so they can thrive all summer long. Now that I think about it, can we make #MoistCurlSummer a thing? Checkout my wash day routine below!

My current wash day routine:

Step 1: SheaMoisture Curl and Shine Coconut Shampoo for Curly Hair

This shampoo is phthalate free and paraben free. It contains coconut oil to moisturize and protect hair while replenishing lost oil. Not only does it smell AMAZING but this shampoo gently washes away impurities, leaving you with frizz free waves and curls.

Step 2: Carol’s Daughter Coco Creme Curl Quenching Conditioner with Coconut Oil for Very Dry Hair

I love love LOVE Carol’s Daughters products. Not only does this conditioner help with my extremely dry, color treated hair but it provides instant moisture to soften and restore shine. Created for naturally curly hair, Carol’s Daughter use the ingredients our curls crave, like Mango Seed Butter, Shea Butter, and Coconut Oil.

Prop tip: I like to detangle my hair when my conditioner is soaking in with a brush like this one. IT makes it that much easier to comb through the curls without the breakage!

Step 3: Miss Jessie’s Leave In Conditioning Curl Detangler

After I shampoo, condition and detangle my hair, I like to use about a quarter size amount of this Miss Jessie’s Leave in Conditioner & Curl Detangler. I comb through it one more time with a wide comb to make sure my curls are coated and detangled. I love that this product adds back moisture and leaves my curls frizz free. If I’m doing a wash and then putting my hair into a low bun or top knot, I’ll end my wash day here. And when I do, my curls stay soft and moisturized until my next wash which I love!

Step 4: Miss Jessie’s Jelly Soft Curls Gel.

On days when I decide to style my curls and wear them out, I’ll go through section by section and apply a small amount of Miss Jessie’s Jelly Soft Curls Gel. What I love about this product is that it doesn’t leave my curls crunchy and crisp like some gels do. Because it’s cream based, instead your curls are going to shine and thrive. Paired with the leave-in conditioner, the duo gives my curls a nice hold while keeping a soft bounce!
