My Favorite: Hair Care Products for Textured Hair

I’m going to preface today’s post with this simple statement. I am no expert when it comes to hair. I literally just learned about smoothing down baby hairs last week. Safe to say I have lots to learn but after rocking my natural curls for the past four years and officially being on team faux locs, I’ve had the opportunity to play around with and try lots of products for textured hair (i.e. curly, coily, frizzy) and I’ve got a few clear favorites.

These are the products that work for me personally and are products that seem to be great for lots of other hair types. However, with any beauty product (skin, makeup, hair, etc), you definitely have to try out a few different things to see what works for you. But because there are endless amounts of brands and products out there, I thought I’d give you a good place to start. So let’s dive in.

For Styling…

Hands down, this SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Style Milk is my favorite styling product of all time. I’ve been using it consistently since I started rocking my natural curls and haven’t looked back. It’s super lightweight but still does a great job of defining my curls without a crunch. They’re soft, touchable and last all day.

How to use:

After washing your hair, scrunch a quarter-sized amount throughout your curls.

For Cleansing…

I’m a newbie when it comes to the Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Nourishing and Conditioning Cleansing Conditioner but so far, I am obsessed. I started using a few months ago as a co-wash (aka a way to cleanse my hair without a shampoo) while still keep it conditioned and absolutely love it.

How to use:

With my faux locs, I mix the cleansing conditioner with water into a spray bottle and apply to my roots then rinse. When I had my curls, I used it like regular a shampoo. Apply then rinse. You can follow up with a leave-in conditioner for extra hydration.

For Drying…

I have been a fan of a good microfiber towel for a while now and for good reason. I love the Luxe Beauty Essentials Microfiber Hair Towel because it’s big enough for my faux locs and keeps my hair feeling soft. The main reason to sue a microfiber towel is to avoid the frizziness that comes from using a cotton towel. It’s a great way to dry off your hair without losing the shine from your freshly washed locks.

How to use:

Pat your hair dry with the microfiber towel and then hang to dry.

For Redefining…

Raise your hand if your curls look a little blah the next day. I started using the Mixed Chicks Morning After Redefining Foam right before we went to South Africa last year and became hooked instantly. This product allows you to redefine those slept on, frizzy or flat curls without having to completely re-wash or style your tresses.

How to use:

When you wake up, scrunch a good amount into your hair to redefine and style.

For Moisturizing…

This is my absolutely favorite leave in conditioner. It’s very lightweight and I love that it comes in a light misting spray. The Carol’s Daughter Almond Milk Daily Damage Repair Leave-In Conditioner is great for daily use and doesn’t leave that icky build up or bulk that some leave ins have. I usually spray this right before I style my hair or when I’m feeling like my hair is a little dryer than usual.

How to use:

Apply to damp hair before style or scrunch into your hair between wash days for extra hydration.

For Nourishing…

This THE MANE CHOICE Hair Growth Oil is great for keeping your roots silky smooth and nourished. I love applying to my roots on wash days and sometimes even to my ends and edges in between wash days to keep things looking fresh and hydrated.

How to use:

Apply a small amount to your roots. edges and ends after washing your hair, before drying and styling.
