To say my hair journey has been a long, bumpy ride would probably be the understatement of the year. If you’ve been following me since the beginning, you’ve seen about every hair color, length, style, cut, etc. I’ve had a fiery red hair to my shoulders. Black hair with bangs. A blonde bob. And pretty much everything in between. I’ve done the straight hair thing since I was middle school and never really embraced my curls. I either didn’t love the cut or length of my locks or hought my curls were to child-like or frizzy. That all changed a little over a year ago when I decided to chop off my hair, play with this blonde-ish color and go curly…like all the day. I haven’t put a straightener to my hair since December 2013 and I think it’s safe to say my curls have never been better. But it takes a little more than water + no heat.
I was recently introduced to Deva Curl from a family friend and after becoming way too obsessed with her curls, I had to give it a try. Whether you have loose waves or super curly curls, I swear you will fall in love. Their products are free of the harsh chemicals that hurt the bounce and shine of our curls and it doesn’t hurt that the styling creams smell SO good.
Check out a few of my easy steps to getting the perfect curl below. And if you’re on your own curly hair journey, I’d love to hear about it! Sounds off in the comments!
- Step One: Start with Deva Curl’s No-Poo Decadence Zero Lather Ultra Moisturizing Cleanser. The name alone makes me super happy. So cute. And the “poo” that it’s referring to is the harsh stuff that causes your shampoo to lather. Believe it or not – the lather isn’t actually necessary for clean hair. This cleanser is perfect for giving your curls the strength, moisture and protection they need.
- Step Two: Follow up to your cleanser with the One Condition Decadence Ultra Moisturizing Conditioner. Talk about the perfect cure to frizzy, dry curls. Which was basically me all day errrrrrry day. Sometimes I skip the cleanser and just use this conditioner for a little added moisture.
- Step Three: Now that you’ve done the whole rinse and repeat thing, it’s time to lock in those curls. I love the Supercream Coconut Curl Styler and the Touchable Curl Definer Styling Cream. I sometimes alternate depending on the moisture level any given day. And sometimes I combine the two creams together. Add about a quarter size to your palm and scrunch it throughout your curls.
- Step Four: This might be my favorite part. Every curly girl knows a diffuser is her best friend. The DevaFuser is the perfect attachment to your existing hairdryer and is ideal for drying your curls without making them frizzy or stringy. Run this over your curls until dry and the fluff them up for a little extra bounce.
