I recently did a major closet clean out and was straight up embarrassed at how many things I had hanging up that I never wore. I’ll be honest, I get excited for shoots and end up buying a ton of super cute, trendy things that look great in photos and for special occasions but when it comes to my everyday style, they never leave the hanger. It’s a true waste of money and I came to the realization recently that I only need a few key things to build a bomb ass wardrobe.
Now don’t get me wrong, every girl needs a selection of fun pieces she can break out for birthday dinners, fancy date nights and just, well, for the hell of it. But she doesn’t need an entire closet full of those fun pieces if she’s wearing the same thing everyday #amiright? That’s where I am right now. I go through stages with my style where sometimes I like to get crazy every time I get dressed (usually when I have a lot of events or we have a lot of trips coming up). I’m currently in the minimal stage which you all know by now so my everyday wear and even the things I wear for nicer occasions tends to lean more towards the minimal side.
I took a step back and assessed the pieces I wear the most often. These are the pieces I wear at least once a week. I dress them up, dress them down, rock them alone and pair them together. I create looks using one or two of them as the base and sometimes create looks with just these basics. But at the end of the day, if I could only have 10 pieces in my closet, these are the 10 pieces I could probably live with.
one. I kid you not, I think I wear my loafers 3-4 days a week. With jeans, my
two. Oh, the slip dress. This sexy staple is a must have in my closet. Worn alone, well, sexy. Paired with strappy heels and sparkly earrings, gorgeous. Layer under a sweater and pair with your loafers for brunch or dress down even more with a denim jacket and chucks. Seriously, so many options and you can find one at any price point.
three. A good faux leather jacket should be no surprise at this point. If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll see that I wear mine pretty much every day with everything. Mine is a little over three years old and still going strong. That’s how timeless and perfect they are. You don’t have to splurge either. This one is only $50 and will be the perfect topper for any casual or dressy look you rock this season.
four.We all talk about the LBD but do you actually wear yours? I’ve found that the key is finding one that isn’t too dressy. I love this knotted version because you can easily dress it down with booties or loafers or dress it up with heels.
five. A good simple shirt will take you very far. On day when you just want to throw on something other than your sweats, you can rock your tee with jeans or leggings and you’re good to go. You can also pair it with a pencil skirt or trousers for the office or dress it up with a leather mini for date night.
six. Another thing you might see me wear a lot of on IG is my coveted black jeans. Brandon hates them because I wear them so much. I don’t know what it is but I always feel a little more put together or “chic” when I’m wearing black jeans. They go with everything, dress up any look and are just so flattering.
seven. I love a simple pair of tan heels. I’m really into suede lately and wear mine for everything from girl’s night out to date night to family brunches. They go with jeans, a wedding guest look or your
eight. I’ve really been into midi skirts lately and can’t stop buying them. My favorite way to wear them is with a simple tee shirt and leather jacket but you can also dress them up for the office with a white button down and blazer or dress them up even more with a lacey crop and bold earrings.
nine. When it comes to my jeans, I always always always make sure I have a few good pairs of distressed or boyfriend jeans. When you want to get a little more effortless, these are the way to go. I love rocking mine with a button-up and tan heels or going totally casual with a pair of
ten. This bright red shirt might totally surprise you but I do have a few bright & bold blouses in my closet. These are perfect for creating easy and chic date night looks and are also the perfect way to make a statement without making the entire look over the top.
